Biography

Noemia Vieira de Souza was born in Duas Barras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 6 April 1912. Her parents were Júlio Vieira de Matos and Maria Svoboda. Her mother was born in Austria-Hungary, and passed away at the age of 96. She had five siblings: Francisca, Irene, Júlio, Antônio and José. According to her family, she was known to be a talented dancer while in school, and her talents would lead her to become a skilled artisan and seamstress.

In 1931, she married Manoel Luiz de Souza. The couple had 8 children: Rita, Antônio, Manoel, Nilza, José, Moacir, Elza and Elci. Her husband passed away in 1969. At the age of 111, she had 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Noemia Vieira de Souza passed away in Duas Barras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 26 August 2023, at the age of 111 years, 142 days.

Recognition

In 2019, being the oldest citizen in Duas Barras, the city council awarded her the Victorino Araújo de Barros medal.

Her age was verified by Gabriel Ainsworth, Stefan Maglov and Filipe Lopes, and validated by LongeviQuest on 12 June 2023. The family had long believed that her birth year was 1913. Only in 2023 was the correct year discovered, after Noemia’s granddaughter, Iara, found her baptismal certificate. This confirmed the true birth date of April 6th, 1912.
